How to lose weight

Isn’t it amazing that a simple tweet can change your life forever?

A few months ago whilst going through my twitter account; I came a tweet by Darren Burgess (@darrenburgess25). For those that haven’t heard of him, he is the head of fitness and conditioning at Liverpool Football Club. What this guy doesn’t know about fitness isn’t worth knowing. Anyway he tweeted the following message “Interesting blog from a Sports Science Guru about fat loss. Not sure I agree yet but he is the Master! The URL was also included in the tweet. http://blogs.bmj.com/bjsm/2011/09/01/guest-blog-by-professor-timothy-noakes-a-comment-on-good-calories-bad-calaories-and-why-we-get-fat-and-what-to-do-about-it/

I did what any inquisitive person would do and followed the link and read the article.

This was the start of my fat loss journey.

The article mentioned a couple of books by Gary Taubes, I went out and purchased both of them straight away. For those looking to do the same I recommend you read ‘Why We Get Fat And What To Do About It’. This is the second book the first has the same info but more in depth.

I have been trying to lose weight ever since I gained a few extra pounds about 12 years ago. The problem has been every time I’d lose the weight, I’d regained it with interest. So back in September when I started to look into this new diet, you can imagine I was a bit sceptical.

To my surprise everything Gary mentioned made perfect sense. He wasn’t talking about a diet plan, just explained in very simple language why we gain weight. We gain weight because we eat too many processed carbs, and if we simply cut out Wheat, Sugar, Potatoes and Rice from our diets we’d instantly lose weight. In other words just follow the Atkins diet.

This is what I did and so far I’ve lost 25 pounds! Although impressive this isn’t the best bit of it, I now know how to lose weight and I know what once I’ve lost all the weight I need to lose then if I gain any more weight it’ll be because I chose too.

PS

There are still a few questions that I need answering and they are as follows.

  • Why was I thin and now I’m fat, even though my fat intake has gone down.
  • Why do Carbs make you fat?
  • Why can some people eat what they want and still lose weight?
  • Why doesn’t fat make you fat?
  • Which fats are good for you and which aren’t?
  • Why is saturated fat good for you?
  • What part does exercise play in you losing weight?
  • What is the difference between losing weight and losing fat?
As soon as I have the answers to these and many other questions I'll post them on here.
