I must
travel across the River Torne at least four or five times a day, but have you
ever wondered where the source is?
I have in
the past thought about this but not really checked into it, so as I was driving
over the bridge today I thought I’d take a picture and try and trace the river
as far as I could.
Instead of
going out on foot or via a boat of some descript, I decided to do this via
Google Earth. (Well, it’s bloody freezing out there)!
So anyway, having
tracked it to the A60 between Tickhill and Oldcotes I lost the trail. However a
few fields further on there are a couple of lakes called Upper and Lower Lakes
near the village of Firbeck. I think there maybe an underground link between
the lakes and the river.
However
both lakes don’t appear to have any source or exit, so the next question is
where do they get their water from?
So maybe in
the summer months I’ll have to trek on foot to see if I can get to the bottom
of these mysteries.
Oh and if
you’re wondering where the river end up. It joins the River Trent by a village
called Keadby near Scunthorpe.
