This tree has
caused me a few sleepless nights I can tell you. However the tree and I have a
history going back almost 27 years.
You see when we took over our shop in April
1985 this tree was only a sapling. It and its six brothers had just been newly
planted outside the shops. Vandals had taken care of one of the trees and I took
it upon myself to look after the ones directly outside our store. That didn’t
really involve a lot of work, just a bit of watering now and then as well as
making sure they remained straight and true.
If I’d
known they were going to cause me so much hassle later on, then I think I would
have ripped the roots out myself.
The issue
came when we decided to extend the shop and all of a sudden the tree became the
centre of some of the most heated exchanges of emails between us and the
council. In the end we had to hire an Arboriculturist (Tree specialist) to
fight our corner.
Apart from
the cost, it delayed the work on the extension by almost 18months. And we had
to make a lot of alternations to our original plans.
The good
news is the shop was built, albeit with a corner section missing. On the other side
of the said corner is that tree.
