I was really looking to eating this, but
alas I burnt the food. All was going well up to instruction 4, I did as
instructed I put it in my preheated oven for an hour, but after about 25
minutes I started smell burning. I checked the meat and I’d totally charred
that meat.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 medium onions, minced
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 cup milk
2 slices Texas toast thick-sliced bread
1/2 cup raisins
1 teaspoon apricot jam
1 tablespoon hot chutney
1/2 tablespoon curry powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 large egg
1 pinch salt
1 bay leaf
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the onions in the hot oil until soft. Break the ground beef into the skillet and cook until brown.
- Place the milk in a shallow dish. Soak the bread in the milk. Squeeze the excess milk from the bread. Set the milk aside. Add the bread to the beef mixture. Stir in the raisins, apricot jam, chutney, curry powder, salt, and black pepper. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake in the preheated oven 1 hour.
- While the Bobotie bakes, whisk together the reserved milk, egg, and a pinch of salt. Pour over top of the dish. Lay the bay leaf onto the top of the milk mixture.
- Return the Bobotie to the oven until the top is golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes. Remove bay leaf before serving.
Trying to figure out what I did wrong, I think
maybe I should have used a smaller dish and put a lid on it. But all the YouTube
videos I’d seen have it in the oven uncovered. Also next time I’m going to cook
it for only 20 mins and see what happens.
Overall it tastes great (if you ignore the
burnt taste) and I’ll definitely be cooking this again.
Just because of what I did I’m only going
to give it a 6 out of 10, but I know it deserves a lot higher score.
